On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) unveiled the eighth edition of ‘EnviStats India 2025 Environment Statistics’ at a national workshop held in New Delhi on June 5, 2025. The annual report serves as a key reference for understanding the current state of the environment in India.

‘EnviStats India 2025’ is based on the United Nations Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (FDES) 2013, providing a structured framework to analyse environmental data. The statistics are sourced from various government departments and organisations and organised into six thematic components for clarity and ease of reference.
Noteworthy Trends And Developments
Energy Sector Growth
Thermal power output grew significantly from 792,053 GWh in 2013-14 to 1,326,549 GWh in 2023-24.
Renewable energy generation also expanded, rising from 65,520 GWh to 225,835 GWh over the same period, indicating a steady shift towards clean energy sources.
Aquaculture Expansion
Inland fish production saw a major increase, doubling from 61.36 lakh tonnes in 2013-14 to 139.07 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, reflecting strong growth in India’s fisheries sector.
Climate And Rainfall Insights
The average annual temperature increased from 25.05°C in 2001 to 25.74°C in 2024, with rises in both minimum and maximum values.
Rainfall patterns between 2001 and 2024 showed monsoonal variability without establishing a consistent long-term trend.
Biodiversity And Faunal Richness
India remains a major contributor to global biodiversity: 20,613 marine species, 9,436 freshwater species, 22,404 soil-based species
In total, India hosts 1,04,561 faunal species, out of the estimated 16,73,627 species globally.
Environmental Expenditure
The Environmental Sustainability Sector accounted for the largest share of spending at ?2,433.24 crore in 2021-22.
Investment in the Conservation of Natural Resources Sector is rising.
Agro-forestry, however, recorded the least expenditure among the assessed sectors.

The 2025 edition of EnviStats introduces fresh indicators covering access to electricity, sanitation, and transportation. It also includes an updated inventory of Ramsar sites, curated with expert inputs. The format of the publication has been redesigned to follow a component-based layout for better accessibility and user comprehension.
