In a notable shift in national symbolism, Bangladesh’s interim administration, under the leadership of Muhammad Yunus, has introduced a redesigned series of Taka banknotes that omit the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country's founding leader. Purpose Of Redesign
According to the Bangladesh Bank, the redesign seeks to eliminate political affiliations from currency while celebrating the country’s diverse cultural and natural assets. Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan emphasized that the goal is to foster an inclusive and heritage-focused national image.
Coexistence With Existing Notes
The new series will not replace the older currency immediately. Notes and coins featuring Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will continue to circulate alongside the new designs, indicating a gradual transition rather than an abrupt change.
Political Context
This move follows major political upheaval. In August 2024, Sheikh Hasina was removed from office following mass public demonstrations. On June 1, 2025, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal accepted charges against her related to crimes against humanity. She is currently believed to be in exile in India, with formal extradition proceedings underway.
