As World Environment Day 2025 nears, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has unveiled a sobering analysis of India’s environmental, health, and socio-economic conditions. Titled “State of India’s Environment in Figures 2025,” the report evaluates 36 states and Union Territories across 48 indicators, underscoring escalating climate threats, infrastructure gaps, and public health risks.
Environmental Governance And Regional Performance
Andhra Pradesh emerged as a front-runner in environmental governance, largely due to strong forest and biodiversity preservation policies. Yet, it lags in areas like sewage treatment and river pollution control. Sikkim’s commitment to organic farming positions it as an agricultural leader, but its support mechanisms for farmers require strengthening. Meanwhile, Goa scored high on public health and infrastructure metrics, although it faces challenges such as a shortage of hospital beds.
Climate Extremes On Rise
The year 2024 saw a spike in erratic weather events. Twenty-five states reported unprecedented rainfall levels. Alarmingly, 88% of the year’s days witnessed extreme weather events, resulting in widespread displacement. Assam bore the brunt, with flooding accounting for two-thirds of the 5.4 million internal displacements nationwide.
Surging Emissions
India’s greenhouse gas emissions have hit 7.8% of the global total an all-time high. Between 2020 and 2023, emission growth accelerated, raising doubts over the country’s climate mitigation strategies and long-term sustainability goals.
Water Stress And Waste Surge
The groundwater crisis is deepening, with 135 districts extracting water from depths beyond 40 metres. Nearly half of the monitored river sites report contamination by heavy metals. E-waste has increased by 147% over the last seven years, while plastic waste generation hit 4.14 million tonnes a record high. Remediation of legacy waste is behind schedule, with only 50% of targets expected to be met by the 2026 deadline.
Wildlife Conflicts Escalate
Development-related deforestation has disturbed wildlife habitats, intensifying human-animal conflicts. Fatal elephant encounters have surged by 36%, and tiger attacks continue to pose a significant risk in certain regions.
Health Hazards And Air Pollution
Air pollution remains a persistent threat to public health. In Delhi alone, air quality levels cut life expectancy by nearly eight years. The healthcare system is under pressure, with insufficient community health centres and a severe shortage of specialists.
Economic Vulnerabilities
India’s economic stability is under strain. Worker incomes have been steadily declining since 2017. The informal sector accounts for more than 73% of employment, often without social security. Gender inequality is prominent, with men holding a majority of full-time jobs while women’s workforce participation remains limited.
Urgent Policy Interventions Needed
CSE’s report calls for a renewed focus on accurate data collection, transparency, and evidence-based policymaking. The findings act as a wake-up call, urging swift and decisive action across environmental, health, and economic fronts to secure a sustainable future for India.
