India has made history by winning the presidency of the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS), marking a significant milestone in the organisation’s century-long existence. For the first time, the presidency was decided through a formal voting process. Shri V. Srinivas, Secretary of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), represented India and secured 87 votes out of 141, reflecting wide international support.
About IIAS
The International Institute of Administrative Sciences is a global organisation comprising 31 member nations and 20 national sections. Its core mission is to promote scientific research and knowledge sharing in the field of public administration. Prominent member countries include India, Japan, China, Germany, and South Africa. While IIAS works closely with the United Nations on governance-related initiatives, it is not an official UN body.
India’s Involvement With IIAS
Since joining IIAS in 1998, India has actively engaged in its various programmes and initiatives. The country’s involvement has focused on promoting innovative governance practices. As the new president, India will advance the vision of “Maximum Governance, Minimum Government,” with an emphasis on administrative efficiency and digital transformation.
Election Highlights
The presidential election was conducted during the IIAS Annual Conference on June 3, 2025. Initially, four countries India, Austria, South Africa, and Bahrain were in the running. South Africa later withdrew its nomination after the candidate hearing round. The final vote saw a face-off between India and Austria, with India emerging victorious.
Goals For Presidency
India plans to steer IIAS towards key themes such as digital governance, institutional reform, and inclusive administration. The focus will be on narrowing the North-South gap in public administration by fostering equitable knowledge-sharing and collaboration among nations.
Global Importance Of India’s Leadership
India’s presidency at IIAS is both symbolic and strategic. It provides a platform to showcase India’s public governance achievements and influence international administrative standards. The leadership role also allows India to contribute meaningfully to shaping the future of global public administration.
