Raja Khas, a village located in Kangra district, has achieved the distinction of being declared Himachal Pradesh’s first Solar Model Village. This recognition comes as part of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a national initiative focused on expanding solar energy adoption in rural India. The village stood out for its exceptional performance in solar energy implementation, outperforming 42 other villages during a six-month competition.
About Initiative
The PM Surya Ghar scheme is a central government effort aimed at reducing dependency on traditional energy sources by promoting clean and renewable solar power, particularly in rural areas. Raja Khas emerged as a leader by installing solar systems with a total capacity of 3,700 kilowatts, showcasing significant strides toward energy sustainability.
Selection Process And Evaluation
The selection process took place between November 20 and May 19, during which 43 villages from Kangra district were evaluated based on their solar installation progress. Raja Khas emerged at the top due to its proactive implementation and community participation in the solar mission.
Funding And Government Support
To boost its solar infrastructure further, a grant of Rupees 1 crore will be allocated to Raja Khas. This funding will be used to install solar-powered street lighting, water heaters, and a solar plant, further enhancing the village's renewable energy capacity. The grant signifies strong government backing for the transition to clean energy sources.
Community Involvement And Leadership
The success of this initiative is also attributed to the active participation of the local population. Jyoti Devi, the village sarpanch, expressed her pride in the village's achievement and highlighted the role of collective effort in maintaining solar assets and promoting clean energy awareness.

The creation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will help guide the implementation of future solar initiatives in similar rural settings.
