India has unveiled Bharat Gen, a pioneering Artificial Intelligence (AI) project aimed at developing a multimodal Large Language Model (LLM) tailored to the country’s unique linguistic and cultural diversity. Introduced at the BharatGen Summit—India's largest event dedicated to Generative AI this initiative is being led under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) and is backed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
Vision And Objectives
Bharat Gen is built to support 22 Indian languages, incorporating capabilities in text, speech, and image processing. Its core mission is to develop AI tools that serve vital sectors like healthcare, agriculture, governance, and education through region-specific and linguistically adaptive solutions.
Government Involvement And Broader Goals
Spearheaded by government funding and academic collaboration, Bharat Gen represents a critical step in India's AI strategy. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has highlighted the initiative as a national mission, aligning it with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “India’s Techade” vision, which promotes inclusive and ethical AI advancements rooted in Indian values.
Transforming Key Sectors
In healthcare, Bharat Gen’s multilingual AI capabilities will make telemedicine more effective by enabling consultations in local languages—boosting patient confidence and accessibility. In governance, it will enhance platforms like CPGRAMS by incorporating native-language grievance redressal, fostering improved citizen-government interaction.
Boosting Innovation And Startups
The programme also nurtures innovation and entrepreneurship. Already, over 3,000 agritech startups have emerged, with standout successes such as lavender farming in Jammu & Kashmir. Bharat Gen’s research and implementation efforts are carried out through 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs) across the country.
Collaborative Partnerships And Events
The summit witnessed multiple inter-institutional collaborations, including the signing of key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). It also launched the Generative AI Hackathon 2025, aimed at encouraging young innovators to build AI-driven solutions for real-world problems.
Strategic Pillars For Future
Bharat Gen operates on four strategic pillars:
Advanced technology development
Promotion of entrepreneurship
Skilled human resource development
Strengthening international partnerships
These pillars are expected to guide India’s AI landscape toward greater inclusion, innovation, and sectoral transformation.
