Description

The Ghatampur Thermal Power Project, recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, represents a pivotal development in India’s energy infrastructure. Situated in Kanpur Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh, this large-scale initiative is designed to meet the growing electricity demands of the state and adjoining regions. It is a joint undertaking between Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL), NLC India Limited, and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited, contributing to both energy security and sustainable power generation in the country.

Project Highlights

The plant comprises three supercritical thermal units of 660 MW each, delivering a total installed capacity of 1,980 MW. With an investment of approximately Rupees 21,780.94 crore, the first unit is already commissioned, while the other two are scheduled for completion by the 2025–26 financial year.

Power Distribution And Agreements

A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) has been established for the distribution of 1,487.28 MW of electricity. Under this arrangement:

  • Uttar Pradesh will receive 75.12%

  • Assam will receive 24.88%

This distribution is contingent on transferring 20% equity from Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited to the Assam Government.

Eco-Friendly Technologies

The plant integrates cutting-edge environmental protection systems, including:

  • Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions

  • Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) to control sulphur dioxide (SOx) levels

  • A Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) mechanism, ensuring no wastewater leaves the facility

  • Installation of Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations and Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems for real-time tracking of emissions

Water Conservation Initiatives

To support environmental sustainability, the project includes 288 km of canal lining to reduce seepage and save around 195 million litres per day (MLD). The project’s raw water reservoirs can store nearly 46 lakh cubic metres of water, further boosting conservation.

High Operational Standards

The plant features coal-based supercritical boilers with an efficiency rate of 88.81%. A coal stockyard capable of holding 10.165 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) ensures uninterrupted 30-day operations at full capacity. Power evacuation is facilitated via a 765 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and a state-of-the-art substation automation system.

Economic And Employment Benefits

This thermal power plant is expected to create numerous job opportunities both direct and indirect and stimulate local economic growth. It aligns with the national vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, promoting self-reliance in power generation and regional development.

Outlook And Long-Term Impact

Designed with robust systems and emission controls, the Ghatampur project is poised to deliver reliable and affordable electricity for years to come. It reflects the Ministry of Coal’s commitment to balancing energy needs with environmental responsibility, and stands as a model for future power infrastructure in India.
