Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have identified a new frog species, Amolops shillong, in the urban landscape of Shillong, Meghalaya. The discovery highlights the surprising coexistence of urban development and ecological diversity, showing that even cities can shelter rare and sensitive wildlife species.

The newly identified Shillong cascade frog was located in forested patches of the Mawlai and Umrynjah areas within the city. The frog is known to inhabit fast-flowing streams, suggesting that specific urban microhabitats still offer viable environments for such amphibians. The study was recently published in the Records of the Zoological Survey of India and underscores the untapped potential for biodiversity in urban settings.

To distinguish Amolops shillong from closely related species, scientists employed molecular analysis due to its near-identical appearance to other frogs. DNA sequencing revealed that this species is genetically distinct from Amolops siju, a species earlier found in the Siju Caves of Meghalaya. The two species show a genetic variation of approximately 2.0% to 3.4%.
