Description
The 17th edition of Exercise Nomadic Elephant, a bilateral military drill between India and Mongolia, is scheduled to be conducted in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from May 31 to June 13, 2025. This annual event, held alternately in both nations, aims to bolster defence cooperation and operational synergy. The previous edition was hosted in Umroi, Meghalaya in July 2024.
About Exercise: Nomadic Elephant
Exercise Nomadic Elephant serves as a platform for enhancing mutual understanding between the armed forces of India and Mongolia. The focus lies on counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism training under United Nations mandates. Through this initiative, both countries aim to refine their ability to operate together in complex scenarios.
Participating Units And Forces
India will be represented by 45 soldiers from the Arunachal Scouts, a specialised infantry unit adept at high-altitude warfare. The Mongolian Armed Forces will contribute around 150 Special Forces personnel. Both sides will collaborate in joint drills that simulate realistic combat conditions.
Key Training Elements And Goals
This edition features an expanded set of training modules, including:
Endurance drills
Reflex shooting
Room clearing and intervention techniques
Small team tactics
Rock climbing and mountain warfare skills
A new addition to the exercise is the incorporation of cyber warfare simulations, increasing the exercise’s scope and tactical relevance. The overarching goal is to strengthen joint operational capabilities in mountainous and semi-conventional combat environments.
Tactical Simulations And Combat Drills
The exercise will also include critical tactical manoeuvres such as:
Simulated anti-terror operations
Establishment of a joint command post
Landing zone security protocols
Special Heliborne Operations (SHBO)
Insertion and extraction missions
Drone deployment and anti-drone systems
These activities aim to increase real-time cooperation and responsiveness between the two militaries.
Evolution Of Nomadic Elephant Series
Launched in 2004 with its first edition hosted in Mongolia, Exercise Nomadic Elephant has become a cornerstone of India-Mongolia military relations. Each successive edition has broadened the scope of engagement and operational complexity.
Expanding India-Mongolia Defence Partnership
The military relationship between the two nations extends beyond this bilateral exercise. India and Mongolia operate a Joint Working Group on Defence Cooperation, which meets annually to discuss strategic collaboration. India also regularly participates in Mongolia’s multinational peacekeeping drill, Exercise Khan Quest. These initiatives reflect the shared commitment to regional peace, security, and military collaboration.
