Description

Two Indian peacekeepers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving under the United Nations flag in the past year will be posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjold Medal. The honours will be conferred on May 29, during the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, observed to recognise the dedication and sacrifice of peacekeeping personnel worldwide.

About Dag Hammarskjold Medal

The Dag Hammarskjold Medal represents the highest tribute the UN offers to its peacekeepers. Instituted in 1997, the medal is awarded posthumously to those who have lost their lives while serving in peacekeeping missions under direct UN command.

This honour is conferred annually on May 29, during a special ceremony at the UN Headquarters, acknowledging peacekeepers from member states who lost personnel during the previous year. The award is named after Dag Hammarskjold, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, who perished in a plane crash in 1961 during a peace mission in the Congo.

The inaugural medal was presented to Hammarskjold's family in October 1998. The second recipient was Commandant René de Labarrière, a military observer who became the first peacekeeper to die in a UN mission in 1948.

Other Key UN Peacekeeping Awards

  • Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal for Exceptional Courage: Recognises UN military, police, or civilian personnel who display extraordinary bravery in high-risk situations while upholding the mission’s objectives or humanitarian service.

  • UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award: Introduced in 2016, this award honours peacekeepers who champion gender equality and implement the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which addresses women’s roles in peace and security.

India’s Role in UN Peacekeeping

India has been one of the most steadfast contributors to UN peacekeeping since the 1950s, deploying over 290,000 personnel to more than 50 missions globally making it the largest troop-contributing nation in UN history.

Currently, India has over 5,000 troops serving in nine of the eleven active UN missions, many of which are in conflict-prone and hostile environments. In addition to troop contributions, India supports UN peacekeeping through training, capacity-building, and technological aid, playing a critical role in enhancing mission effectiveness.
