In a significant development for the North-East region, Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, has been linked to the national railway network through the Bairabi–Sairang railway line. Spanning 51.38 km, this railway extension marks a milestone in enhancing transportation infrastructure and fostering regional growth.
Key Highlights Of Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line
The Bairabi–Sairang project is a ?5,021.45 crore initiative, with over 94% physical progress and almost 97% financial completion. Designed to traverse Mizoram's rugged terrain, the project features 48 tunnels and 55 major bridges, making it an engineering marvel. One of its standout structures is Bridge No. 196, which reaches a height of 104 metres, taller than the Qutub Minar. The line is segmented into four parts, with one already operational.
Overcoming Engineering Hurdles
Constructing rail infrastructure in Mizoram’s hilly landscape required advanced engineering solutions. The project’s complexity is reflected in the number of tunnels and elevated bridges needed to ensure both safety and long-term durability.

This project forms part of the Ministry of Railways' broader initiative to connect all capitals of the North-Eastern states to the Indian railway network. Ongoing projects include:
Dimapur–Kohima Line in Nagaland, targeted for December 2029
Murkongselek–Pasighat Line linking Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, set for February 2026
Sivok–Rangpo Line, connecting Sikkim to the network for the first time
These projects are designed to improve accessibility, foster economic integration, and promote regional unity.

Expanding rail connectivity in the North-East holds both economic and strategic value. Efficient railway infrastructure will enable faster movement of defence personnel and equipment, enhancing national security.
