The Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, has unveiled two digital platforms ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’ to modernise India's addressing infrastructure. These tools are part of efforts to implement the National Geospatial Policy 2022, which promotes the use of location-based services for enhanced governance and public service delivery.
Know Your DIGIPIN: A Next-Gen Addressing System
The DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is a location-based, digital address system structured on a grid model. Jointly developed with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC, DIGIPIN enables Address-as-a-Service (AaaS) using precise geolocation data.
Users can generate a unique DIGIPIN by inputting exact latitude and longitude coordinates.
The system is designed to streamline last-mile delivery, emergency services, and logistics, especially in remote and rural regions.
Government bodies and private entities can integrate this tool to ensure precise and efficient service delivery.
The platform promotes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and is part of an open-source ecosystem, with its documentation and source code available on GitHub.
Know Your PIN Code: Enhanced Accuracy For Traditional Addresses
Originally introduced in 1972, India’s six-digit PIN Code system has undergone a geospatial upgrade. A nationwide geofencing exercise has digitally mapped all PIN Code boundaries to improve accuracy.
The ‘Know Your PIN Code’ application helps users determine the correct PIN Code based on their physical location.
Users can also submit feedback, helping refine and update postal data over time.
The new georeferenced PIN Code data is publicly accessible through the Open Government Data (OGD) Platform, supporting transparency and collaborative improvement.
A Push Towards Digital Public Infrastructure
The launch of these applications reflects the Department of Posts’ broader role in advancing Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in India. According to Ms. Vandita Kaul, Secretary of the Department of Posts, the DIGIPIN system will enable every Indian citizen to be digitally locatable, thus revolutionising the way public services are accessed and delivered.
Encouraging Citizen Participation
Public involvement is a key component of these initiatives. Citizens are encouraged to engage with the platforms and offer suggestions for improving data accuracy and usability. This collaborative model aims to develop a responsive, reliable, and inclusive digital address system for India.
