Description

The recent storm that hit Delhi highlighted a distinctive weather phenomenon called a bow echo. On radar, this appears as a curved or crescent-shaped pattern. Bow echoes are significant because they often signal the approach of intense windstorms. During the Delhi event, wind speeds reached up to 100 km/h, underscoring the importance of recognizing bow echoes for predicting severe weather.

Know About Bow Echo

A bow echo is a radar-detected formation of a thunderstorm line that curves outward like a bow. These formations can extend from 20 km to 100 km and usually last between three to six hours. The term “bow echo” was first coined in the 1970s by meteorologist Ted Fujita.

How Bow Echoes Form

Bow echoes develop when cooler air, chilled by rain, sinks toward the ground and spreads outwards, forming a gust front. This front acts as a boundary where cooler air meets warmer, moist air near the surface. The warmer air is then forced upward, generating new thunderstorms. This ongoing process creates the characteristic bowed shape as the airflow bends the storm system.

Key Features Of Bow Echoes

These formations are often linked to severe weather, especially damaging straight-line winds. Bow echoes can evolve into derechos, which are extensive and long-lasting storm systems. The continual reinforcement of rain-cooled air allows the storms to maintain their strength over time.Bow Echoes in India’s Weather History

Bow echoes are not uncommon in India. One notable event occurred on May 31, 2022, when a bow echo caused strong winds up to 100 km/h over Delhi and Noida. Similar weather patterns have been recorded during thunderstorms in other parts of the country, including Odisha.

Connection Between Bow Echoes And Derechos

A derecho is a large-scale windstorm that often develops from one or more bow echoes. It features widespread, powerful winds exceeding 93 km/h (58 mph) and can travel over long distances typically more than 400 km (250 miles).

Importance For Weather Forecasting

Meteorologists monitor bow echoes carefully because of their potential to cause severe weather. Gaining a deeper understanding of how these systems form and behave helps improve weather predictions. Modern radar technologies play a crucial role in detecting bow echoes early, enabling timely warnings and preparedness efforts.
