Description

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has given the green light to the execution model for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), marking a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of next-generation air power. This initiative aims to develop a fifth-generation, deep-penetration fighter aircraft tailored for the Indian Air Force (IAF), further advancing the country's self-reliance in defence technologies.

Overview Of AMCA Project

The AMCA is envisioned as a twin-engine, multirole combat aircraft with a medium-weight configuration. It will incorporate advanced stealth features such as an internal weapons bay and radar-absorbing design, making it ideal for deep-strike operations, close-range engagements, and precision targeting missions. The aircraft is projected to have a takeoff weight of approximately 25 tonnes, significantly boosting the IAF’s tactical and strategic reach.

Industry Participation And Execution Strategy

The approved model promotes a collaborative framework involving both public and private sector firms. Unlike earlier defence projects that largely depended on state-run companies, the AMCA will adopt a competitive bidding process. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) will spearhead the programme, working closely with Indian defence and aerospace firms to drive innovation and execution.

Strategic Significance

The AMCA initiative propels India into the elite league of nations such as the United States, Russia, and China—that possess fifth-generation fighter jet capabilities. The project is vital to bolstering India's air superiority and defence preparedness, especially in the context of emerging security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

Development Timeline And Budget

The Cabinet Committee on Security sanctioned the programme in March 2024. The development cost is estimated to be around ?15,000 crore. The prototype of the AMCA is expected to be ready by 2035, with multiple development phases planned over the coming years.

Key Technologies

The AMCA will integrate advanced avionics, superior electronic warfare capabilities, and stealth technology. Engine development will be a crucial aspect, likely involving international partnerships to reduce technological dependency and manage developmental risks.

Boost To Self-Reliance

This project aligns with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) initiative by fostering indigenous defence manufacturing. The government aims to harness local talent and industrial capabilities by inviting Expressions of Interest (EoI) from qualified players for the development phase. This move is set to enhance India's domestic aerospace ecosystem and reduce reliance on foreign imports.
