Description

Launched in May 2025, Operation Sindoor represents a significant evolution in India's military planning methodology. For the first time, the Indian Armed Forces integrated “red teaming” into an actual operational framework, showcasing a forward-thinking approach aimed at enhancing strategic foresight and preparedness.

Understanding Red Teaming

Red teaming is a concept rooted in military simulations where one team called the red team adopts the role of the adversary to challenge and test the strategies of the defending team, known as the blue team. This method allows for a deeper analysis of vulnerabilities, potential enemy tactics, and gaps in planning. In the Indian context, this practice has been formalized under the name ‘Vidur Vakta’, inspired by the wise and critical advisor Vidura from the epic Mahabharata. Although long practiced informally, the Indian Army has only recently begun to institutionalize this concept.

Application In Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor marked the first real-time use of red teaming by the Indian military. A group of five senior officers functioned as the red team, embedded directly in the mission planning phase. Their task was to rigorously test the operational strategies and simulate adversarial responses. This helped refine the mission's effectiveness and anticipate counteractions from hostile forces.

Context And Objectives

The operation was initiated in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 civilian casualties. The Indian government attributed the attack to Pakistan-based terror outfits. Operation Sindoor specifically targeted nine terrorist training camps, many associated with groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Use Of Advanced Weaponry

The Indian military leveraged cutting-edge assets during the operation. Rafale fighter jets, armed with SCALP missiles and AASM Hammer precision-guided bombs, were central to the air offensive. Additionally, BrahMos cruise missiles and loitering munitions were employed for targeted strikes. These tools enabled precise neutralization of militant infrastructure while minimizing collateral damage.

Red Teaming As Future Of Military Planning

Encouraged by the operational success, the Indian Army is planning a wider implementation of red teaming. A structured roadmap has been laid out to fully establish the ‘Vidur Vakta’ framework within the next two years. This move will not only strengthen internal capability but also reduce dependence on international military advisory systems.

Global Relevance And Strategic Modernisation

Red teaming has been an established tactic in many global military institutions, especially prominent during the Cold War to anticipate Soviet moves. India’s formal adoption signals a strategic shift towards more adaptive and proactive military doctrines. It aligns with global best practices and represents a notable step toward modernizing India’s defence preparedness.
