About Kumbakonam Vetrilai
The Kumbakonam Vetrilai is distinguished by its distinct aroma, texture, and taste, which are attributed to the rich alluvial soil and favorable climatic conditions of the Cauvery delta region. The leaves are typically oblong, heart-shaped, and vary in color from deep green to lighter shades, accompanied by a sharp and pungent flavor that makes them highly sought after.

Cultivation And Harvesting Process
The cultivation of Kumbakonam Vetrilai follows a carefully managed process. After planting, the initial leaves known as kolundhuvetrilai emerge within 20 to 25 days. These early leaves mark the beginning of the harvesting cycle.
The first major harvest, which occurs between the seventh and twelfth months after planting, is known as maaruvethalai. These leaves are notably larger, have a longer shelf life of about six to seven days, and command higher prices in local and regional markets due to their superior quality and durability.
In subsequent years, the yield produces kelavethalai (second year) and kattavethalai (third year), which are smaller in size compared to the initial harvest. Despite the reduced leaf size, these later yields remain valuable and contribute to the overall productivity of the betel leaf plantations.
