Description

China and Pakistan have announced plans to extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan, aiming to boost trilateral cooperation among the three countries. This decision came after a meeting involving the foreign ministers of China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, marking their first trilateral dialogue since recent military activities in the region. India has expressed strong opposition to this expansion, citing concerns over sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Know About CPEC

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a major infrastructure project launched in 2015 under China’s broader Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Initially valued at around US$46 billion, the project’s worth has now increased to approximately US$62 billion. CPEC is focused on developing trade routes through Pakistan, linking China to the strategically important Gwadar Port, with the goal of enhancing economic growth and improving infrastructure in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Reliance On CPEC

For Pakistan, CPEC plays a crucial role in addressing its pressing infrastructure challenges, particularly chronic power shortages that have hindered economic progress. However, this growing reliance on Chinese investments has raised concerns about the country’s economic sovereignty. Pakistan’s financial situation has become more precarious due to mounting debts, and the suspension of coal projects in line with global climate goals has added additional stress to its energy sector.

Expansion Of CPEC Into Afghanistan

The proposed extension of CPEC into Afghanistan aims to link Pakistan’s existing infrastructure with Afghanistan’s transportation networks, including the development of railway lines and highways. This expansion is expected to provide Afghanistan with greater access to mineral resources and energy pipelines. There are, however, concerns that some of these initiatives might also serve military logistics purposes under the cover of trade development.

India’s Concerns And Opposition

India has long opposed China’s Belt and Road Initiative, particularly the CPEC, as the corridor passes through Pakistan-administered Kashmir a region India claims as its own. India views the project as a strategic move that increases Chinese influence in Pakistan and poses a threat to its national security. Moreover, China’s military support to Pakistan further complicates the regional security dynamics from India’s perspective.

Geopolitical Impact On Region

The expansion of CPEC into Afghanistan highlights shifting alliances in South Asia, reinforcing the partnership between China and Pakistan, while potentially isolating India. The involvement of the Taliban in this trilateral cooperation indicates a strategic alignment that may counterbalance Indian interests in the region. This development is likely to deepen geopolitical tensions and complicate India’s diplomatic engagements in South Asia.
