The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was opened for signature during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and legally entered into force on December 29, 1993.
Initially, December 29 was designated as the IDB. However, recognizing that late December posed logistical difficulties for global awareness campaigns, the UN General Assembly decided in 2000 to change the date to May 22—the day the CBD was formally adopted in 1992.
The shift has allowed greater international engagement and has contributed significantly to increased awareness of biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and the importance of conservation efforts.
