India has officially taken over as the Chair of the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) for the term 2025–2026. The handover occurred during the 67th Governing Body Meeting (GBM) held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
About Asian Productivity Organization
Established in 1961 and headquartered in Tokyo, the APO is a regional intergovernmental organization committed to improving productivity and economic development across the Asia-Pacific. Its 21 member countries including India, Japan, South Korea, and nations in Southeast Asia collaborate through knowledge-sharing, technical programs, and capacity-building initiatives.
India’s Longstanding Role
India, as a founding member of the APO, has actively contributed to shaping its objectives and programs. Each year, over 100 Indian experts and professionals participate in APO-sponsored initiatives to enhance productivity in sectors like industry, agriculture, and services.
Advancing APO Vision 2030
At the Jakarta session, India reiterated its support for the APO Vision 2030, which emphasizes sustainable development, inclusive growth, and regional cooperation. India also committed to expanding the implementation of the Green Productivity 2.0 strategy, aimed at integrating eco-friendly practices into productivity frameworks.
Promoting Regional Synergy
India emphasized the value of regional cooperation to address shared challenges such as digital transformation, innovation, and climate-resilient development. The country expressed interest in encouraging entrepreneurship and collaborative innovation across member economies.
National Initiatives And Capacity Building
The National Productivity Council (NPC), operating under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), leads the implementation of APO activities in India. The NPC has spearheaded several demonstration projects involving Green Productivity practices and Industry 4.0 technologies for MSMEs, with the aim of improving operational efficiency and competitiveness.
Strategic Governance
The Governing Body is the APO’s top decision-making institution, convening annually to shape the organization's strategic goals, approve project plans, and assess the performance of its Tokyo-based secretariat. The 67th GBM in Jakarta played a pivotal role in defining APO’s future direction.
Diversity In Membership
The APO’s 21-member composition includes a diverse mix of economies, such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, and others. This diversity fosters a broad spectrum of perspectives, experiences, and innovative solutions that enhance the overall impact of productivity initiatives across the region.
