The Government of India has introduced several digital tools aimed at improving the effectiveness and transparency of the Public Distribution System (PDS). These platforms Depot Darpan, Anna Mitra, and Anna Sahayata are part of a broader effort to streamline the distribution of subsidised food grains to over 81 crore beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
Depot Darpan: Modernising Food Grain Depots
Depot Darpan is a digital platform designed to facilitate self-assessment and performance monitoring at food grain depots. It provides depot staff with a structured method to evaluate their operations based on specific infrastructure and service criteria. The portal uses IoT-based sensors and CCTV surveillance to offer real-time updates, ensuring better operational management. This initiative is expected to result in cost savings of around Rupees 275 crore and enhance the functioning of storage facilities.
Anna Mitra App: Real-Time Insights For PDS Stakeholders
The Anna Mitra mobile application supports real-time information sharing for stakeholders like Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealers and Food Inspectors. FPS dealers can access inventory updates and transaction records, while inspectors can carry out geo-tagged inspections to ensure service delivery standards. Available in Hindi and English, the app is currently functional in four states, promoting greater accountability in food distribution.
Anna Sahayata: Improved Grievance Redressal
To address concerns raised by PMGKAY (Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana) beneficiaries, the Anna Sahayata platform provides a user-friendly grievance redressal mechanism. Integrating tools like WhatsApp and IVRS, the platform ensures that complaints are handled quickly and in multiple regional languages. It is initially being implemented across five states, with the goal of increasing citizen engagement and satisfaction.
Strengthening Food And Nutritional Security
These digital upgrades complement broader national schemes like One Nation One Ration Card, which allows beneficiaries to access food grains from any part of the country. Such innovations help maintain low inflation rates and support food security, especially in times of global economic uncertainty.
Infrastructure Investment And Technological Integration
The government is also investing heavily in modernising storage and logistics. An allocation of Rupees 280 crore for the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) and Rupees 1000 crore for the Food Corporation of India (FCI) aims to upgrade operational infrastructure. Plans are underway to roll out smart warehouse technologies nationwide, backed by a grading framework to evaluate depot performance.
