Description

GS1, short for Global Standards One, is an international non-profit organization dedicated to creating and maintaining global standards that facilitate efficient product identification, improve supply chain transparency, and enhance consumer safety worldwide. Founded nearly five decades ago, GS1 revolutionized commerce by introducing the barcode system, which has become the backbone of retail and logistics industries around the globe. Today, GS1 operates across more than 100 countries, including India, where GS1 India oversees the adoption and implementation of these standards.

Introduction To New Generation QR Code System

GS1 has announced a major upgrade to product identification technology with the global rollout of next-generation QR codes, slated for completion by 2027. These advanced QR codes are designed to handle significantly larger volumes of data compared to traditional barcodes, allowing businesses and consumers to access richer, more detailed product information instantly.

Key advantages of the new QR codes include:

  • Enhanced Product Traceability: The codes will enable precise tracking of products throughout the supply chain, ensuring authenticity and reducing fraud.

  • Real-Time Inventory Management: Retailers and manufacturers will gain improved visibility into stock levels and movement, optimizing logistics and reducing waste.

  • Consumer Transparency: Shoppers will be able to scan products to obtain detailed information about ingredients, sourcing, certifications, and safety instructions, promoting informed purchasing decisions.

  • Improved Product Authentication: The QR codes will help combat counterfeit goods by allowing verification directly at points of sale.

During the initial phase of implementation, packages will carry dual codes — the existing one-dimensional (1D) barcode alongside the new QR code. This dual-coding approach ensures compatibility with existing Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, many of which currently scan only traditional barcodes. Once retail technology infrastructures are upgraded universally, packaging will transition to exclusively featuring the advanced QR code.

Understanding Barcodes

Barcodes are visual, machine-readable representations of data designed to quickly identify and track products, shipments, and records. They come in two main types:

  • One-Dimensional (1D) Barcodes: Characterized by vertical lines of varying widths and spacing, 1D barcodes are widely used in retail and logistics.

  • Two-Dimensional (2D) Barcodes: These include QR codes and other matrix codes that encode information both horizontally and vertically, allowing more data to be stored in a smaller space.

The concept of the barcode dates back to the early 1970s, invented by George Laurer and Norman Joseph Woodland. It evolved into the Universal Product Code (UPC), a standard adopted globally for retail product identification.

About QR Codes

QR codes, or Quick Response codes, are a type of 2D barcode developed in 1994 by Masahiro Hara in Japan. Unlike traditional barcodes, QR codes store information in both horizontal and vertical dimensions, significantly increasing their data capacity. This makes QR codes highly versatile and popular for numerous applications, such as:

  • Digital payments, including India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system.

  • Event ticketing and access control.

  • Inventory and product tracking in supermarkets and warehouses.

  • Product authentication and anti-counterfeiting measures.

With GS1’s new-generation QR codes, the scope of these applications is set to expand further, driving greater efficiency, security, and transparency across industries worldwide.
