Description
The Government of India has introduced an upgraded Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) portal to enhance immigration services for OCI cardholders. Launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in May 2025, the revamped portal addresses the growing needs of more than 5 million individuals of Indian origin, aiming to provide a more efficient and user-friendly digital experience.
Origin Of OCI Scheme
The OCI initiative was originally established in 2005 following an amendment to the Citizenship Act of 1955. It grants registration rights to Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who were Indian citizens after January 26, 1950. However, individuals with Pakistani or Bangladeshi heritage remain ineligible for this status under current regulations.
