Description

The Tamil Nadu government has shifted control of its Rupees 50 crore Endangered Species Conservation Fund to the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) to accelerate the protection of at-risk wildlife species. This move comes after the State Forest Development Agency (SFDA), previously responsible for the fund, was deemed largely inactive. The reallocation seeks to address pressing conservation priorities, notably for species like the Malabar civet and Salim Ali’s fruit bat.

About Advanced Institute For Wildlife Conservation (AIWC)

Established in October 2017, the AIWC is located in Vandalur, Chennai, and functions under the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. The institute focuses on scientific research, training, and the practical application of conservation techniques. By working closely with zoological parks and academic institutions, AIWC promotes data-driven conservation methods and facilitates wildlife research and capacity-building initiatives.

Key Responsibilities Of AIWC

AIWC undertakes both in-situ (field-based) and ex-situ (captive) wildlife research. It supports grant-funded projects aimed at safeguarding endangered species and provides expert advice on wildlife management strategies. The institute prioritizes studies on lesser-known and critically endangered animals, playing a vital role in policy-making and conservation planning.

Focus On Malabar Large-Spotted Civet

The Malabar large-spotted civet (Viverra civettina) is a nocturnal, solitary mammal endemic to the Western Ghats and is currently listed as critically endangered. Adults typically weigh between 18–20 pounds and grow up to four feet in length. Notable features include a grey coat with dark spots and a black dorsal stripe. The species generally gives birth to 2–3 young per litter.

Habitat Loss And Dietary Patterns

Originally native to dense lowland forests, the Malabar civet now survives in fragmented patches such as cashew plantations due to extensive deforestation. It is an omnivore, feeding on reptiles, birds, amphibians, small mammals, eggs, and fruits, which makes it a vital link in the local food web.

Revised Objectives Of Conservation Fund

With its transfer to AIWC, the fund will now support comprehensive studies on endangered species throughout Tamil Nadu. This includes ecological surveys, mapping of habitats, and species assessments inside and outside of protected zones. AIWC also plans to invite proposals from researchers and institutions to foster collaborative conservation work.

Challenges And Road Ahead

The administrative shift from SFDA to AIWC highlights ongoing difficulties in effectively managing conservation initiatives. However, with AIWC’s active and research-driven approach, Tamil Nadu aims to overcome past inefficiencies. The focus now lies in implementing timely and effective strategies to prevent the extinction of its most vulnerable species.
