Description
India’s national security apparatus has received a significant upgrade with the modernization of the Multi Agency Centre (MAC), a central hub for intelligence coordination. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently inaugurated the enhanced MAC, positioning it as a key component in the fight against terrorism and related security threats. Originally created in 2001 following the Kargil conflict and reinforced post the 2008 Mumbai attacks, the centre now operates with advanced capabilities to meet evolving challenges.
About Multi Agency Centre (MAC)
The MAC functions as a multi-agency intelligence-sharing platform under the Intelligence Bureau. It facilitates seamless coordination and real-time data exchange among 28 key organisations, including the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), various defence services, and law enforcement bodies. Its scope covers critical zones such as Jammu & Kashmir, the Northeast, Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) regions, and the rest of the country.
Infrastructure Expansion And Investment
The upgraded MAC network now connects every police district in India using a robust and secure communication framework. Developed with an investment of Rupees 500 crore, this infrastructure ensures last-mile connectivity, including in remote, mountainous, and conflict-prone regions. The expansion enhances the capacity for swift intelligence gathering and coordinated responses.
Incorporating Cutting-Edge Technology
Technological innovation is central to the revamped MAC. Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools are now integrated into its systems. These technologies allow for efficient data processing, identification of emerging threats, and advanced mapping of potential hotspots.

With its new capabilities, MAC significantly boosts the analytical and operational strength of India’s security forces. The platform supports predictive modeling, risk assessment, and rapid response planning against threats such as terrorism, organised crime networks, and cyberattacks.

During the inauguration, the Home Minister highlighted the importance of integrating databases from multiple central and state agencies into the MAC platform.
