Current Trade Dynamics
From April to February 2024-25, India’s exports to Turkey totaled approximately USD 5.2 billion, reflecting a decline from USD 6.65 billion in the previous fiscal year. Exports to Azerbaijan reached USD 86.07 million, down slightly from USD 89.67 million in 2023-24. On the import side, India imported USD 2.84 billion worth of goods from Turkey, down from USD 3.78 billion the previous year. Imports from Azerbaijan, however, rose to USD 1.93 million, up from USD 0.74 million in the prior period. Despite these fluctuations, India maintains a trade surplus with both nations.
Key Trade Commodities
India's primary exports to Turkey include mineral fuels, electrical machinery, automotive components, pharmaceuticals, organic chemicals, and cotton. In return, India imports items like marble, apples, and mineral oils from Turkey. Exports to Azerbaijan consist of tobacco, tea, and chemical products, while imports include animal feed and essential oils.
Impact Of Ongoing Tensions
The current geopolitical strain could significantly disrupt these trade relationships. With rising calls for boycotts and negative perceptions of Turkish and Azerbaijani products among Indian consumers, trade volumes are likely to decline further. This sentiment may deepen as diplomatic tensions persist.
Cultural And People-to-People Connections
Despite these challenges, India shares cultural and educational links with both countries. Approximately 3,000 Indian nationals live in Turkey, including about 200 students. In Azerbaijan, over 1,500 Indians reside, contributing to bilateral cultural ties. These communities often play a crucial role in maintaining people-to-people connections, which can influence trade and diplomatic engagements.
Tourism And Travel Trends
Tourism has historically been a vital component of India’s relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan. In 2023, around 300,000 Indian tourists visited Turkey, while over 200,000 traveled to Azerbaijan. However, recent travel advisories may impact these figures, potentially reducing the flow of visitors in the coming months.
