Astronomers from the Russian Academy of Sciences, utilizing data from the Spektr-RG (SRG) space observatory, have discovered 11 new Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) during their comprehensive all-sky X-ray surveys.
About Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs)
Active Galactic Nuclei are highly energetic, compact areas located at the centers of galaxies, known for emitting enormous amounts of electromagnetic radiation that often outshine the entire galaxy. This intense radiation typically results from material being pulled into a supermassive black hole or from vigorous star-forming activity. AGNs are some of the brightest and most enduring energy sources in the cosmos, playing a crucial role in the study of galaxy evolution and formation.
The recent discoveries were made by analyzing both optical and X-ray data of sources cataloged in ARTSS1-5, using the ART-XC telescope aboard the SRG observatory. Prior to this, the research team had already identified over 50 AGNs and several cataclysmic variable stars.
Details Of Newly Discovered AGNs
The 11 newly identified AGNs are situated at redshifts between 0.028 and 0.258, placing them relatively close in astronomical terms. Their X-ray luminosities range from 2 to 300 × 1039 erg/s, aligning with typical luminosity values observed in known AGNs.
Seyfert Galaxy Classification
All of these AGNs have been classified as Seyfert galaxies, a widely studied category of AGNs distinguished by their unique emission lines:
Seven of the galaxies fall under Seyfert Type 1 (Sy 1), characterized by broad optical emission lines.
Three galaxies are Seyfert Type 1.9 (Sy 1.9), exhibiting partially broadened emission lines.
One galaxy is classified as Seyfert Type 2 (Sy 2), noted for narrow emission lines.
Though Seyfert galaxies resemble normal galaxies in visible light, they are marked by strong emissions in the infrared and X-ray wavelengths, due to active processes occurring in their galactic nuclei.
