Description
In response to increasing tensions with Pakistan, the Indian government has activated the Territorial Army (TA) to strengthen military preparedness across the country. Fourteen of the 32 existing TA battalions have been deployed to key strategic locations, reflecting a proactive approach to national security.
Understanding Territorial Army
The Territorial Army serves as a critical reserve component of India’s defence framework. Unlike regular soldiers, TA personnel are civilian volunteers who balance their professional careers with military service. Structure And Training Of Territorial Army
With approximately 50,000 members spread across 65 units, the TA includes both departmental units, like those from the Railways and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), as well as non-departmental units such as infantry battalions and ecological task forces. Each member undergoes two months of military training annually, ensuring they are prepared for rapid deployment. When activated, TA personnel receive the same pay and benefits as regular army officers.

The roots of the Territorial Army can be traced back to the Indian Territorial Force, established in 1920, with its conceptual foundation dating even further back to the 1857 uprising. The modern Territorial Army was formally established under the Territorial Army Act of 1948 and was officially launched by C. Rajagopalachari in 1949. Over the decades, the TA has participated in key military campaigns, including the 1962 Sino-Indian War, the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani Wars, and counter-insurgency operations.
Operational Role And Contributions
The TA has played significant roles in various military and humanitarian operations. It was involved in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka and has supported counter-insurgency efforts in regions like Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. Beyond combat, TA units also assist in disaster relief operations, reflecting their versatility and commitment to national service.
