Description
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has successfully delivered the new Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) INS Arnala to the Indian Navy, marking a significant step in bolstering India's coastal defence capabilities. This delivery is part of a broader contract signed in April 2019, which involves the construction of eight ASW SWCs aimed at enhancing the Navy’s ability to detect and counter potential underwater threats in shallow coastal waters.
About INS Arnala
INS Arnala is a cutting-edge vessel measuring 77.6 metres in length and 10.5 metres in width, specifically designed for comprehensive sub-surface surveillance and anti-submarine operations. It can operate in coordination with aerial assets, providing a layered approach to maritime security. Built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the ship's construction was carried out in collaboration with L&T Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu, highlighting the importance of joint efforts in strengthening India’s naval infrastructure.
Strategic Significance Of INS Arnala
The vessel is named after the historic Arnala Island, known for its strategic maritime importance and historical association with the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The introduction of the Arnala-class ships marks a critical upgrade to the Indian Navy's coastal defence fleet, replacing the older Abhay-class vessels. This enhancement is expected to significantly improve India’s ability to detect, track, and engage underwater threats in littoral zones.

Indigenisation And Local Manufacturing
Reflecting the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative, more than 80% of the craft's components are sourced from indigenous suppliers. This focus on local manufacturing not only reduces dependence on foreign defence imports but also stimulates the domestic defence industry, creating jobs and fostering technical expertise within the country.
Future Prospects
GRSE is currently involved in the construction of 16 additional warships, including next-generation stealth frigates and offshore patrol vessels. This ongoing expansion is a clear indication of India’s commitment to modernising its naval capabilities, ensuring it remains a dominant maritime power in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
