This inscription is widely regarded as one of the earliest and most direct references to the Buddha's remains, adding immense spiritual value to the artifacts.
Under the 1878 Indian Treasure Trove Act, the British colonial administration claimed the bones and ash fragments from the site, which were later presented as a diplomatic gift to King Chulalongkorn of Siam (modern-day Thailand), a significant Buddhist nation. This gesture was seen as a symbolic reaffirmation of the spiritual bond between India, the birthplace of Buddhism, and Thailand, where the faith remains deeply rooted.

Following the discovery, most of the 1,800 gems from the Piprahwa site were transferred to what is now the Indian Museum in Kolkata, where they remain to this day as part of the museum's prized collections. However, a portion of the find, approximately 20%, was permitted to be retained by Peppe as a personal reward, with colonial administrators at the time referring to these pieces as "duplicates."
Over the decades, some of these privately held gems have changed hands, leading to concerns within the global Buddhist community about their potential commercial exploitation.
