Description
India has officially launched chip-based e-passports as part of its broader efforts to digitize travel documentation. These modern passports, equipped with RFID chips and biometric data, aim to bolster the security, efficiency, and convenience of international travel for Indian citizens. This initiative places India among nations like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, which have already adopted advanced e-passport technologies.

The rollout of the chip-based e-passports began on April 1, 2024, as part of the Government of India's Passport Seva Programme Version 2.0. This major step in modernizing the country's travel infrastructure enhances the security and integrity of Indian passports, making them tamper-resistant. It coincides with the introduction of new passport regulations in 2025.
Key Features of the New Chip-Based E-Passports
RFID Chip & Antenna: Securely stores biometric and personal information.
Enhanced Security: Designed to be highly resistant to counterfeiting or duplication.
Scannable Barcode: Allows immigration officers digital access to residential address information.

Implementation and Rollout
Pilot Launch: April 1, 2024.
Cities Issuing E-Passports: Chennai, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Amritsar, Goa, Raipur, Surat, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, and Shimla.
Issuance Locations: Selected Regional Passport Offices (RPOs).
New Passport Guidelines (2025)
Birth Certificate Requirement: Compulsory for those born after October 1, 2023.
Digital Residential Address: The address will be stored electronically, no longer printed on the last page of the passport.
Parents' Information Removed: The updated format now contains only essential personal details.
