About Saola
The Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis), often referred to as the "Asian Unicorn," is one of the rarest large land mammals in the world. The species is known for its long, straight horns, which can reach up to 20 inches, found in both males and females, and its distinctive white facial markings. The Saola is native to the misty, evergreen forests of the Annamite Mountains, which straddle the Vietnam-Laos border. The transition from hunter-gatherer societies to agricultural ones around 4,000 years ago exacerbated hunting pressures, leading to forest loss and the isolation of the two populations. This genetic split caused each group to lose distinct genetic diversity, but together, their gene pools complement each other.
