The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) has unveiled the Mission for Advancement of High-impact Areas on Electric Vehicles (MAHA-EV) to accelerate technological innovation in the electric vehicle (EV) space. This mission is designed to tackle critical challenges in India’s EV ecosystem and aims to position the country as a global hub for cutting-edge EV technology.
Core Objectives Of MAHA-EV
The MAHA-EV initiative is structured around advancing research and development in three high-impact technological domains:
Tropical EV Battery and Battery Cells
Power Electronics, Machines, and Drives
Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure
These focus areas were chosen to resolve existing barriers and drive technological excellence in the EV sector.
Designated e-Nodes For Implementation
To execute the mission, seven e-Mobility Nodes (e-Nodes) have been selected, including IIT Bombay and NIT Surathkal. These institutions will lead targeted R&D efforts in collaboration with industry players and other academic bodies, ensuring the outcomes are both research-intensive and commercially viable.
Collaborative Project Execution
Each selected e-node will function within a consortium model, bringing together academia, research institutions, and industry stakeholders. This collaborative structure is intended to optimize innovation, encourage knowledge sharing, and accelerate product development.
Strong Industry And Academia Interest
The initial call for project proposals attracted 227 submissions, indicating widespread enthusiasm from stakeholders in academia and industry. The approved proposals will align with the mission’s strategic verticals, ensuring focused and impactful R&D.
National Significance Of Electric Mobility
Electric mobility is crucial for achieving India’s sustainability goals. The MAHA-EV mission complements national priorities such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting energy independence, and driving self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
