India’s mining and non-ferrous metals sector reached historic production milestones in the financial year 2024–25, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Mines. This growth continues the upward trend from the previous year and signals a robust industrial resurgence. The rise in production across key minerals such as iron ore, manganese ore, and bauxite, as well as strategic non-ferrous metals like aluminium and copper, is driven by escalating demand in core economic sectors, including steel manufacturing, infrastructure development, construction, and automotive production.
This Is Important
The Ministry’s data reflects a significant acceleration in the production of essential minerals, reaffirming India’s strengthening position as a major global supplier of raw materials. This surge aligns with national initiatives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, which aim to enhance domestic manufacturing and reduce import dependency by leveraging India's natural resource base.
Key Highlights of Mineral Production in FY 2024–25
Iron Ore
Total production reached 289 million metric tonnes (MMT).
Registered a 4.3% year-on-year growth compared to 277 MMT in FY 2023–24.
Accounts for nearly 70% of the total mineral output (under MCDR, Minerals Concession Development Rules) by value.
India maintains its status as the 4th largest iron ore producer globally, serving as a vital supplier to the steel industry.
Manganese Ore
Production rose to 3.8 MMT, up by 11.8% from the previous year's 3.4 MMT.
Used extensively in steel-making and battery manufacturing, indicating rising industrial demand.
Bauxite
Output increased from 24 MMT to 24.7 MMT, recording a 2.9% growth.
Bauxite is essential for aluminium production and forms the backbone of lightweight metal industries.
Lead Concentrate
Production increased from 381 thousand tonnes (THT) to 393 THT, registering a 3.1% growth.
Widely used in batteries, electronics, and protective shielding, lead concentrate continues to be a strategic resource.
Non-Ferrous Metals: A Sector On Rise
Primary Aluminium
India produced 42 lakh tonnes (LT) of primary aluminium in FY 2024–25, up from 41.6 LT the previous year.
The country retains its position as the second-largest aluminium producer globally, supported by abundant bauxite reserves and improved refining capabilities.
Refined Copper
Production of refined copper climbed 12.6%, increasing from 5.09 LT in FY 2023–24 to 5.73 LT in FY 2024–25.
This positions India among the top 10 copper producers worldwide, meeting the growing demand from energy, telecom, and transportation sectors.
Economic Impact And Strategic Relevance
The rise in mineral and metal output plays a crucial role in bolstering India's industrial ecosystem. Key benefits include:
Strengthened supply chains for domestic manufacturing, especially in steel, energy, automotive, and infrastructure sectors.
Enhanced export potential, improving India's balance of trade and foreign exchange reserves.
Support for green and digital transitions, as metals like copper and aluminium are central to electrification, renewable energy, and EV adoption.
Increased employment and regional development in mineral-rich states.
This growth underscores India's move toward becoming a self-reliant industrial hub, capable of meeting both domestic and global demand through sustainable resource development.
