Description

In the wake of heightened tensions with Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, India has bolstered its defence preparedness by receiving a new consignment of Igla-S air defence missile systems from Russia. This strategic acquisition aims to strengthen India’s low-altitude aerial defence capabilities against a range of threats, including enemy aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles.

Know About Igla-S

The Igla-S, also known by its NATO reporting name SA-24 ‘Grinch’, is an advanced Man-Portable Air Defence System (MANPADS) developed by Russia. Designed for use by ground troops, the system is lightweight, portable, and can be deployed rapidly by a single soldier or a small crew.

It serves as a last line of defence against aerial threats, particularly in combat zones and high-threat areas where mobility and swift response are crucial. The Igla-S system is an upgraded version of the earlier Igla series, offering improved range, accuracy, and resistance to countermeasures.

Key Features And Capabilities of Igla-S

Missile System Components:

The complete Igla-S system includes:

  • 9M342 missile – the core projectile designed to track and destroy targets

  • 9P522 launching mechanism – the handheld launcher

  • 9V866-2 mobile test station – used for system diagnostics and readiness checks

  • 9F719-2 test set – provides pre-launch verification and system maintenance

Weight and Portability:

  • Missile: 10.8 kg

  • Full system: Approximately 18 kg
This lightweight profile enhances mobility for infantry and special forces in tactical operations.

Target Engagement Range:

  • Maximum range: Up to 6 kilometers

  • Maximum altitude: Up to 3.5 kilometers
This allows the system to intercept various low-flying threats before they can cause damage.

Guidance and Accuracy:

  • Utilizes infrared (IR) homing technology, enabling the missile to lock onto the heat signatures emitted by enemy aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

  • Its high precision and resistance to jamming make it reliable even in electronically contested environments.

Operational Readiness:

  • Missile speed: 400 meters per second

  • Deployment time: Approximately 13 seconds, allowing for swift reaction in combat situations

Strategic Importance For India

The arrival of the Igla-S systems comes at a time when India's western front faces renewed volatility. The system will be integrated into the Indian Army and possibly the Indian Air Force to enhance point-defence capabilities, especially along sensitive border areas.

This delivery is part of a broader defence partnership between India and Russia, under which New Delhi has been modernizing its inventory of short-range air defence systems to keep pace with evolving threats, including drone warfare and precision missile strikes.

Conclusion

With the inclusion of the Igla-S MANPADS in its arsenal, India adds a robust layer to its air defence strategy. The system’s portability, quick deployment, and ability to neutralize diverse aerial threats make it a vital asset for frontline troops, especially in mountainous and high-conflict zones.
