Description

A groundbreaking study published in ACS Environmental Science & Technology has offered the first direct confirmation that turbidity currents fast-moving, sediment-laden underwater flows can carry microplastics from coastal regions into the deep ocean. This phenomenon has been observed even in submarine canyons not directly fed by rivers, such as the Whittard Canyon located off the coast of Ireland. This finding challenges the earlier assumption that river-fed systems are the primary contributors to deep-sea plastic pollution.

Understanding Turbidity Currents

Turbidity currents are powerful, gravity-driven flows of sediment-laden water that move downslope along the seafloor. These underwater density flows function like avalanches, carrying vast amounts of sand, silt, and debris from continental margins to the deep ocean. They are typically triggered by geological disturbances such as:

  • Submarine earthquakes

  • Underwater landslides

  • Slope collapses

  • Storm-induced sediment failure

Once triggered, these currents gain momentum and erode the seafloor, transporting material across hundreds of kilometers. As the water's turbidity (or cloudiness due to suspended particles) increases, its density rises, allowing it to move rapidly and transport sediments and now confirmed, microplastics into the abyssal depths.

Key Characteristics Of Turbidity Currents:

  • Density and Speed - The high sediment content makes the water denser, allowing it to flow rapidly down slopes.

  • Seafloor Erosion - These currents can cut through the seabed, forming deep underwater valleys.

  • Sediment Deposition - As the current slows, it deposits sediments in layers coarse materials first, followed by finer particles.

  • Topographic Influence - They significantly influence the structure and evolution of deep-sea landscapes.

Role Of Submarine Canyons

Submarine canyons act as major conduits for turbidity currents, facilitating the transfer of sediments and pollutants from continental shelves to the deep ocean floor. These underwater valleys are typically found on the edges of continents and are carved over time by erosional processes.

There are an estimated 9,477 submarine canyons globally, accounting for about 11% of the world’s continental slope area. Their steep walls and deep channels allow for rapid and directed flows, making them critical pathways for deep-sea sedimentation.

Classification of Submarine Canyons and Associated Features:

  • Bank: A raised, flat-topped feature on the continental margin formed by sediment accumulation, e.g., Dogger Bank in the North Sea.

  • Shoal: A shallow region where sediment accumulates near the sea surface, often a navigational hazard.

  • Reef: Usually built from coral or calcareous algae, reefs are biodiversity-rich areas. Coral reefs dominate the Pacific and are associated with seamounts and guyots (flat-topped underwater volcanoes).

Environmental Implications

The study’s revelation that microplastics are being swept into the deep sea by turbidity currents has significant implications for marine conservation and pollution control. It indicates that deep-sea ecosystems once thought to be relatively insulated from surface pollution are vulnerable to contamination. Microplastics can potentially accumulate in ocean trenches and abyssal plains, posing risks to deep-sea organisms and food chains.

Furthermore, since many submarine canyons exist far from river inputs, this mechanism highlights a previously underestimated pathway through which anthropogenic waste can reach the ocean floor, stressing the need for enhanced global monitoring of submarine sediment transport systems.
