The long-standing water-sharing conflict between Punjab and Haryana has intensified after the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) directed the release of 8,500 cusecs of water per day from the Bhakra Dam to Haryana. Background: Sutlej-Beas River Dispute And Historical Agreements
The dispute dates back to the reorganisation of Punjab in 1966, which resulted in the creation of Haryana as a separate state. The waters of the Sutlej and Beas rivers have since been shared between Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan based on a 1981 agreement mediated by the BBMB.
Under this agreement, the surplus water of 17.17 million acre-feet (MAF) was allocated as follows:
Punjab: 4.22 MAF
Haryana: 3.50 MAF
Rajasthan: 8.60 MAF
The BBMB manages this distribution based on the river system's availability and seasonal requirements.
