The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has launched a significant initiative to improve long-term monitoring of the Indian Ocean. This submarine cable project, backed by international scientific collaboration, is designed to enhance the understanding of oceanographic patterns, seismic movements, and tsunami risks in the region.

Details Of Submarine Cable Project

A 150-kilometre-long submarine cable will be installed off the coast of Wandoor in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This system will link two underwater science nodes located at depths between 2,000 and 2,500 metres. These nodes will house high-tech sensors to continuously collect critical ocean and geophysical data. A data landing station will be set up at Wandoor to ensure the real-time transmission of this information, helping monitor seismic activity and potential tsunami triggers with high accuracy.

INCOIS And Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme (ODTP)

INCOIS plays a key role in three of the ten major projects under UNESCO's Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme (ODTP), an initiative led by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). These projects are focused on advancing scientific knowledge and disaster management concerning tsunamis.

Main Objectives of ODTP Projects:

• Investigate past and potential tsunami sources

• Evaluate risks to infrastructure and marine resources

• Enhance tsunami detection, monitoring, and early warning systems

People-Centred Tsunami Early Warning Initiative

One of the major efforts under this programme is the People-Centred Tsunami Early Warning for India (PCTWIN) project. Its aim is to strengthen public awareness, improve tsunami forecasting, and develop efficient communication systems for early alerts. It also focuses on increasing disaster preparedness at the community level to reduce vulnerability during such natural disasters.

Tsunami Ready Odisha (TRO) Project

The Tsunami Ready Odisha initiative is aimed at enhancing the readiness and resilience of coastal populations in Odisha. The programme trains communities to respond effectively to tsunami warnings, helping safeguard lives and property. This initiative is part of UNESCO’s Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme, which sets standards for community preparedness.

Tsunami Hazard Maps And Preparedness Plans

To support public safety, INCOIS has developed tsunami hazard maps and evacuation route plans. These resources are made available to communities to help them respond effectively during emergencies. As of now, two villages in Odisha have achieved "tsunami ready" status, with more in the pipeline, supported by the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA).
