Description

The National Archives of India (NAI), under the Ministry of Culture, has made a significant addition to its extensive repository of historical records by acquiring the private papers of former President and renowned scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. This acquisition is expected to deepen scholarly access to one of modern India’s most inspirational figures and provide valuable insights into his life, thoughts, and contributions to the nation.

About National Archives Of India (NAI)

The National Archives of India serves as the official repository of non-current records of the Government of India, preserving documents of enduring historical, administrative, and legal value. It is the largest archival institution in South Asia and a critical pillar for researchers, historians, and government agencies.

Historical Background

  • The institution was originally established as the Imperial Record Department on March 11, 1891, in Kolkata (then Calcutta) during British rule.

  • In 1911, following the decision to shift the capital of British India to Delhi, the department was moved to New Delhi.

  • The transfer of all archival materials from Kolkata to Delhi was completed by 1937, and the institution was renamed the National Archives of India after Independence.

Functions and Responsibilities

  • The NAI is the custodian of government records of permanent value and plays a central role in the conservation and dissemination of public records.

  • It acts as the nodal agency for the implementation of the Public Records Act, 1993, and the Public Records Rules, 1997.

  • It does not accept classified or confidential documents, but holds records that are open for public consultation under specific regulations.

Holdings

  • The NAI maintains over 340 million pages of documents, including official files, maps, treaties, rare manuscripts, parliamentary debates, censuses, travelogues, and proscribed literature.

  • It houses documents in multiple languages, including Sanskrit, Persian, Urdu, Odia, and English, reflecting India’s multilingual and multicultural history.

Infrastructure

  • The NAI has one regional office in Bhopal and operates three Records Centres located in Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, and Puducherry.

Digital Access Through Abhilekh PATAL

To improve accessibility and promote digital research, the National Archives of India has launched Abhilekh PATAL (Portal for Access to Archives and Learning). This online platform provides researchers with virtual access to the NAI’s rich archival resources.

  • The portal features more than 2.7 million reference records and over 71,000 digitized documents accessible online.

  • It supports scholars, students, and the general public in exploring India’s historical narratives without the need to physically visit the archive.

Importance Of Acquiring Dr. Kalam’s Papers

The inclusion of Dr. Kalam’s private papers into the national archive is a notable milestone. Known as the "Missile Man of India" and the 11th President of the Republic, Dr. Kalam played a pivotal role in India's defense and scientific advancements. His documents will provide deeper insights into his thoughts on technology, governance, youth empowerment, and national development.

This move not only strengthens India’s archival heritage but also ensures that future generations can study and draw inspiration from the life of one of India’s most respected public figures.
