Description
India has officially concluded a major defence agreement with France, valued at Rupees 63,000 crore, for the acquisition of 26 Rafale-Marine fighter jets for the Indian Navy. Under this pact, India will receive 22 single-seat fighter aircraft designed for aircraft carrier missions, along with four dual-seat trainer versions. The delivery timeline is set between 2028 and 2030.
Overview Of Rafale-Marine
Developed by Dassault Aviation, the Rafale-Marine is a multi-role twin-engine aircraft capable of conducting a wide range of missions, including air combat, surveillance, and high-precision strikes. While it does not belong to the fifth-generation stealth category, its advanced design significantly reduces radar detection, placing it in the 4.5-generation class of fighters.
Built For Carrier Operations
What sets the Rafale-M apart is its adaptation for naval use. Aircraft operating from carriers face space and runway limitations, requiring robust and agile designs. The Rafale-M features a strengthened airframe, a tailhook for carrier landings, and a reduced overall weight. It is engineered to take off from ski-jump ramps and can safely ascend by adjusting its angle of attack during launch.
Combat Versatility And Naval Strength
The Rafale-M enhances India’s maritime strike capabilities with its ability to carry out anti-ship and anti-submarine missions. It also boasts corrosion-resistant components, making it well-suited for operations in saline, maritime environments. Once inducted, it will operate alongside the existing MiG-29K fleet, strengthening India’s naval aviation assets.
Boost To Domestic Defence Sector
Aligned with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, the agreement includes elements of technology transfer. This will allow Indian defence firms to integrate indigenous weapon systems with the Rafale-M. Additionally, a manufacturing and maintenance hub will be established in India for aircraft components like the fuselage, generating local employment and strengthening domestic aerospace capabilities.
Strategic Importance
This acquisition marks a significant step in enhancing India's naval aviation capabilities. The Rafale-Marine will act as a force multiplier, increasing interoperability between the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force (IAF). With shared systems and logistics with the IAF’s Rafale fleet, the Navy can optimise training and maintenance efforts, paving the way for smoother joint operations.
