Description
To strengthen the Make in India initiative, the Government of India has introduced the National Manufacturing Mission, as outlined in the Union Budget 2025. The mission aims to significantly raise the manufacturing sector’s contribution to the national GDP, which currently stands at around 16–17%. This ambitious programme seeks to create a competitive, innovation-driven industrial ecosystem while improving the ease of doing business. An interministerial committee has been formed to develop the policy framework and oversee the implementation strategy.
Core Objectives Of National Manufacturing Mission
The mission revolves around five strategic goals:
Simplify Business Regulations - Streamlining procedures to reduce compliance costs and administrative burdens for industries.
Develop a Skilled Workforce - Equipping youth with industry-relevant skills to meet the demands of future manufacturing roles.
Empower MSMEs - Strengthening Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), a critical component of the Indian economy.
Promote Advanced Technologies - Facilitating access to modern manufacturing technologies for industrial advancement.
Improve Product Quality - Enhancing the global competitiveness of Indian products through quality upgrades.
Policy Framework And Implementation Structure
The mission includes extensive policy measures aimed at building a supportive environment for manufacturers. A joint monitoring mechanism will be established involving both central and state-level agencies to ensure coordinated efforts. This integrated approach focuses on infrastructure development, production incentives, and regulatory simplification to promote investment and innovation.
Emphasis On Clean Energy And Labour-Intensive Industries
A key component of the mission is promoting sustainable manufacturing practices. The focus will be on increasing domestic production in clean energy sectors such as solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicle batteries. Additionally, special initiatives will target labour-intensive sectors like footwear and leather, aimed at boosting job creation and entrepreneurship.
Support For MSMEs And Skill Enhancement
Several targeted measures will be introduced to support MSMEs. One such initiative is the Focus Product Scheme tailored for the leather and footwear industries, which is expected to increase output and create employment. Moreover, the mission will support skill-building programmes designed in collaboration with industry to bridge the talent gap.
Sector-Specific Initiatives: Toys And Food Processing
The mission also covers niche sectors under national action plans:
Toys Manufacturing: Under the National Action Plan for Toys, India aims to become a global leader by developing manufacturing hubs and fostering innovation.
Food Processing: The government will establish a National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management in Bihar to promote value addition in agriculture and generate rural employment.
