In a momentous cultural and spiritual shift, Mahant Prem Das, the current Gaddi Nasheen of Hanuman Garhi in Ayodhya, will visit the Ram Temple on April 30, 2025. This event marks a significant break from a tradition that has remained unaltered since the 18th century, where the Gaddi Nasheen has never left the temple’s premises.
Historical Significance Of Hanuman Garhi
Hanuman Garhi is one of the most sacred temples in Ayodhya, believed to have origins dating back to the 10th century. As per tradition, it is thought that Lord Ram entrusted Lord Hanuman with the guardianship of his birthplace. Since then, the Gaddi Nasheen, seen as Hanuman’s earthly representative, has maintained a strict vow to remain within the temple complex, which spans 52 bighas. This practice was institutionalized through a temple constitution established in the 18th century, reinforcing the spiritual gravity of the Gaddi Nasheen's uninterrupted presence.
Role And Responsibilities Of Gaddi Nasheen
The Gaddi Nasheen, or chief spiritual guardian of Hanuman Garhi, plays a central role in conducting religious ceremonies and preserving the sanctity of the temple. Historically, whenever external events required participation, only Hanuman's symbolic representation his chinnah or insignia was sent in place of the Gaddi Nasheen. This underlined the belief that the essence of Hanuman's presence transcends physical boundaries.
Approval For Visit
The landmark decision allowing Mahant Prem Das to visit the Ram Temple was made during a session of the Nirvani Akhara Panchayat, a council of around 400 spiritual leaders. The Mahant stated that his decision was inspired by divine guidance from Lord Hanuman himself. After careful consideration, the council granted approval signaling a rare and transformative moment in religious tradition.
Akshay Tritiya Procession And Rituals
Mahant Prem Das’s visit is scheduled for Akshay Tritiya, a day of immense religious significance. He will begin his journey in a ceremonial chariot bearing Hanuman’s chinnah. However, due to modern security considerations, he will transfer to a four-wheeler upon reaching the Ram Temple. The Mahant will carry 56 varieties of Bhog (offerings) as part of the ritual, underscoring the sacredness of this unique pilgrimage.
