Description
The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) has launched a pioneering initiative known as Satellite Bus as a Service (SBaaS). This program is aimed at empowering private space enterprises in India to design and manufacture indigenous satellite-bus platforms. By reducing the country's reliance on foreign satellite systems, SBaaS is expected to drive innovation and position India as a global provider of small satellite buses and hosted-payload services.
About Satellite Bus
A satellite bus is the standardized structural framework of a satellite. It houses all the core subsystems necessary for satellite functionality, such as power supply, propulsion, thermal control, and communication modules. The payload, which consists of the satellite’s mission-specific equipment like cameras or sensors, is mounted onto this bus. The modular design of satellite buses enables their use across multiple mission types, offering scalability and reusability.
Goals Of SBaaS Program
The initiative has been designed with the following objectives:
Foster innovation in satellite technology among Indian Non-Governmental Entities (NGEs).
Promote self-reliance by minimizing the import of satellite components.
Encourage the development of versatile, small satellite-bus platforms tailored to a wide range of space applications.
Strengthen the Indian private space ecosystem by facilitating collaboration between payload developers and platform providers.
Implementation In Two Phases
The rollout of SBaaS will occur in two key phases:
Phase I - IN-SPACe will shortlist up to four Indian private entities based on their technological strengths. These selected entities will be tasked with developing a multi-mission, modular satellite-bus platform.
Phase II - IN-SPACe will support two hosted-payload missions to validate the real-world utility and performance of the platforms developed in Phase I.
Application & Participation
Indian private space firms (NGEs) interested in this opportunity must register by May 15, 2025, to access detailed documentation. The final deadline for submitting proposals is June 23, 2025. This initiative is part of IN-SPACe's broader mission to streamline private participation in India’s space missions and enable effective collaboration between payload and platform developers.
