The keel for Yard 3040, the fourth vessel in the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) series being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Kolkata, was recently laid, marking a significant milestone in India's efforts to enhance its maritime capabilities.
About Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs)
The Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) are state-of-the-art ships with an approximate displacement of 3,000 tonnes. Designed to perform a variety of critical roles across the maritime domain, these vessels will significantly boost the operational flexibility and reach of the Indian Navy. Their primary missions include:
Coastal Surveillance and Defence: Monitoring and protecting India’s extensive coastline and maritime borders.
Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations: Assisting in emergency situations at sea and providing humanitarian support during disasters.
Protection of Offshore Assets: Safeguarding vital offshore infrastructure, such as oil rigs, gas platforms, and strategic maritime facilities.
Anti-Piracy and Anti-Smuggling Operations: Conducting missions within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and extending beyond when required to ensure maritime security.
Equipped with modern sensors, advanced communication systems, and sophisticated armaments, NGOPVs are designed to strengthen maritime domain awareness and handle low-intensity maritime conflicts effectively. Their versatile design allows for swift reconfiguration depending on mission needs, making them a crucial asset in India's evolving naval strategy.
Background Of NGOPV Project
The construction of NGOPVs is a key initiative under India’s focus on self-reliance in defence production, driven by the broader national missions of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’.
On 30 March 2023, the Ministry of Defence signed contracts for the indigenous design and construction of 11 Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels.
Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) was appointed the Lead Shipyard tasked with building 7 vessels, while Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) was selected as the Follow Shipyard responsible for constructing 4 vessels.
This strategic distribution aims to accelerate the production timeline and enhance the expertise of multiple Indian shipyards, while strengthening India's defence industrial base. Moreover, it underscores India's ambition to expand its presence across critical sea lanes and to assertively safeguard national and regional maritime interests.
The induction of these vessels will not only modernize India's offshore patrolling capability but also play a pivotal role in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief (HADR), and maintaining regional stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
