Description
Recent findings from the Centre for Peninsular Aquatic Genetic Resources in Kochi have led to the identification of two previously unknown freshwater fish species in the Western Ghats. These species Labeo uru and Labeo chekida were discovered after resolving a longstanding classification issue involving Labeo nigrescens. The discovery highlights the critical ecological value of the Western Ghats, a well-known global biodiversity hotspot.
Background Of Discovery
The breakthrough was achieved using a combination of morphological studies on both newly collected samples and historical specimens from rivers in Kerala and Karnataka. The research revisited descriptions of fish species first documented more than 100 years ago, aiming to bring clarity to their identities.
About New Species
Labeo uru was found in the Chandragiri River and derives its name from a traditional wooden sailing vessel, referencing its fin structure that resembles a sail.
Labeo chekida, commonly called ‘kaka chekida’ by locals, is native to the Chalakudy River.
Both species are endemic to their respective river systems, showcasing the region’s rich and unique aquatic biodiversity.

The study also raises concerns about environmental threats such as dam construction and habitat degradation. These activities endanger not only the newly discovered species but also the broader ecological balance of river ecosystems in the Western Ghats.
