Description
India’s cruise tourism sector achieved a major milestone with the commencement of operations at the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT), now the country's largest facility of its kind. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, officially inaugurated the terminal on April 21, 2025. With a projected annual capacity of handling one million passengers and the capability to berth five cruise ships at once, the MICT is a significant step forward in modernizing India’s maritime infrastructure.
Highlights Of MICT Operations
The MICT, situated in Mumbai, is built with an investment of Rupees 556 crore. It boasts the infrastructure to manage up to 10,000 cruise passengers per day. The terminal can handle vessels up to 300 meters long and has a draft of 11 meters, enabling it to accommodate large international cruise ships.
Strategic Port Development At Vadhavan
Alongside the launch of MICT, major investment agreements were signed for the development of Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra. These agreements, worth over Rupees 5,700 crore, will support the construction of specialized terminals for container, bulk, and liquid cargo. A significant portion Rupees 4,200 crore is earmarked for creating a multipurpose cargo terminal, while Rupees 1,000 crore will go toward establishing dedicated terminals for bulk and liquid commodities.
Aligning With National Maritime Vision
The development of MICT and the Vadhavan Port expansion are key components of the Sagarmala Programme, a government initiative aimed at transforming India's port ecosystem. These projects are set to strengthen India’s presence in international cruise tourism and enhance trade logistics, supporting both economic growth and the expansion of industrial supply chains.
