Description

The Royal Munnar Road, a historically significant 120-kilometre route in Kerala, has resurfaced in public discussions in 2025. Originally constructed between 300 and 250 BC, it once connected Aluva to Munnar and played a crucial role in trade and mobility across the region. However, natural calamities and infrastructural changes eventually led to its abandonment. Today, renewed calls for its restoration have sparked a heated debate, balancing heritage with environmental preservation.

Historical Importance Of Royal Munnar Road

The ancient road was once a key artery for commerce, facilitating trade between prominent centers such as the port of Muziris and the inland city of Madurai. In the early 20th century, British tea planters extensively used the route to transport produce. In 1914, the path was upgraded to handle larger vehicles, but its functionality was severely hampered following the catastrophic floods of 1924 and a major landslide at Karinthiri mountain in Perumbankuthu.

In response, authorities planned an alternative route. The new road via Neriamangalam received approval from Rani Sethu Lakshmi Bai in 1931. With the opening of this new route and the Neriamangalam Bridge in 1936, the original Royal Munnar Road was gradually abandoned.

Renewed Interest And Government Involvement

In recent years, there has been a growing movement, particularly from local communities and religious leaders, to reopen the historic road. Proponents argue that its revival could shorten the travel distance to Munnar by approximately 20 kilometers. While current roads serve the region, the proposed reopening has captured the attention of the Kerala state government, which is now exploring the feasibility of the initiative.

Ecological Impact And Opposition

Despite the support, environmental experts and the Forest Department have raised serious concerns. The route traverses the ecologically sensitive Pooyamkutty Valley, home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. A study by the Kerala Forest Research Institute highlighted potential threats, including habitat fragmentation, disruption to wildlife corridors, and an increased risk of human-animal conflict. Elephants, tigers, and other species could be particularly affected if the road is reconstructed.

Community Views And Economic Aspirations

Supporters of the project, especially those in tourism and local commerce, believe that reviving the road could boost regional development and ease access to secluded areas. Church leaders have also backed the idea, emphasizing the route’s cultural and historical legacy. However, conservationists stress the need to protect the fragile ecosystem, warning that economic gains may come at the cost of irreversible environmental damage.
