Description

New World Screwworm (NWS) myiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the larvae of the screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax. Though it primarily affects livestock, humans can occasionally become infected, as seen in a recent case detected in Mexico. The condition is most commonly found in South America and the Caribbean, where the parasite poses a significant health threat.

Understanding New World Screwworm Myiasis

NWS myiasis occurs when the larvae of the screwworm fly infest the tissues of warm-blooded animals. The female fly lays its eggs on open wounds or mucous membranes, where the eggs hatch into larvae. These larvae then burrow into the tissue, feeding on living flesh, causing extensive damage and severe pain. The infestation can result in significant tissue destruction if left untreated.

Symptoms Of NWS Myiasis

The symptoms of New World Screwworm myiasis include:

  • Maggots visible around or within wounds.

  • Persistent skin lesions or sores that do not heal.

  • Increasing pain and bleeding from the affected area.

  • A foul-smelling odor emanating from the wound.

  • The potential development of secondary infections, leading to fever or chills.

The severity of these symptoms can vary, but they are typically quite painful and distressing.

Risk Factors For NWS Myiasis Infection

Certain individuals are more susceptible to NWS myiasis infection, including:

  • People traveling to areas where the infection is endemic, such as parts of South America and the Caribbean.

  • Individuals with open wounds from injuries, surgeries, or scratches.

  • Those with compromised immune systems.

  • People who spend time outdoors or around animals, especially livestock.

NWS Myiasis Spreads

NWS myiasis spreads when a female screwworm fly lays its eggs on open wounds or mucous membranes. The smell of a wound attracts the fly, and even minor injuries can draw these flies. A single female can lay up to 3,000 eggs in her lifetime. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the flesh, leading to an infestation that can damage tissues.

Preventing NWS Myiasis

To prevent NWS myiasis, it is important to take the following precautions:

  • Keep wounds clean and covered at all times.

  • Use insect repellents that are approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

  • Wear protective clothing, including long sleeves and pants, to minimize exposure to flies.

  • Sleep in enclosed or screened areas to avoid fly exposure.

These simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of infestation.

Treatment For NWS Myiasis

If NWS myiasis is suspected, it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately. Treatment involves the removal of larvae from the affected tissue, which may require surgical procedures. It is important not to attempt to remove the maggots on your own, as doing so can lead to complications and worsen the condition.

Prompt treatment is key to preventing further tissue damage and managing the infection effectively.
