In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable urban living, Amaravati, the upcoming capital of Andhra Pradesh, is poised to become the world’s first city entirely powered by renewable energy. Spearheaded by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, this visionary initiative aligns with India's broader goals of green development and climate-resilient infrastructure.
A Greenfield Capital With A Vision For Future
Strategically situated between Vijayawada and Guntur, Amaravati is being planned as a futuristic, environmentally friendly "people’s capital" along the Krishna River. Spanning an area of 217 square kilometres, the city is part of the larger Andhra Pradesh Capital Region, which covers 8,352 sq km. The project's massive scale is matched by its ?65,000 crore estimated cost.
The foundation stone is expected to be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the central government’s support for a green urban development model.
100% Renewable Energy Target: 2,700 MW
One of the most ambitious aspects of Amaravati’s planning is its aim to generate 2,700 megawatts (MW) of power exclusively from solar, wind, and hydropower sources sufficient to meet the city’s energy requirements through 2050. This will completely eliminate the need for fossil fuels in Amaravati’s energy landscape.
The city aims to derive at least 30% of its energy from solar and wind alone, positioning it as a global trailblazer in renewable urban energy solutions.
Solar Integration & Green Construction Standards
Solar energy forms a critical component of Amaravati’s sustainable design. As part of the development strategy:
One-third of rooftops in government housing must be equipped with solar panels.
Compliance with green building norms is mandatory for all major public infrastructure projects, including the Amaravati Government Complex.

Electric Public Transport & EV Infrastructure
Amaravati's transportation blueprint includes a fully electric and renewable energy-powered metro system, complemented by a fleet of electric buses. To support the use of electric vehicles (EVs), an expansive network of EV charging stations will be established in both public and government domains.

Parks
Pedestrian pathways
Bus shelters
Solar Pilot Projects Already Underway
The groundwork for renewable energy is already being laid. As part of a pilot solar project, 415 kW of rooftop solar capacity has been installed across:
16 Anganwadi centres
14 e-health clinics
13 government schools
A multi-faith crematorium
Additionally, net metering systems are being mandated for all government and commercial establishments, enabling them to feed surplus solar power back into the grid.
Cooling City Sustainably
Given Andhra Pradesh’s vulnerability to heatwaves with temperatures peaking at 47.7°C in 2024 Amaravati is also addressing the urgent need for efficient cooling. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) has partnered with Tabreed (a leading global district cooling provider) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to introduce a District Cooling System.

20,000 Refrigeration Tonnes (RT) capacity
Cools essential buildings like the High Court and Secretariat
Reduces cooling energy use by up to 50%
Cuts down on electricity bills and greenhouse gas emissions by replacing conventional air conditioning systems
