Indian Navy vessels INS Chennai and INS Kesari recently took part in the sea phase of the Africa India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME) 2025. The naval exercise featured complex manoeuvring operations and Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) drills, showcasing India’s maritime capabilities and its growing defence cooperation with African nations.
INS Chennai: A Modern Guided Missile Destroyer
INS Chennai is the third and final ship in the Kolkata-class (Project 15A) series of stealth-guided missile destroyers. Built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, it was inducted into the Indian Navy on November 21, 2016, and operates under the Western Naval Command.
Key Features:
Advanced Weapons System - Equipped with supersonic BrahMos missiles for surface-to-surface warfare and Barak-8 long-range surface-to-air missiles for aerial defence.
Countermeasure Systems - Features the indigenous chaff decoy system ‘Kavach’ for missile defence and the torpedo decoy system ‘Mareech’ for underwater threats.
Versatility - Can support up to two multi-role helicopters and is optimized for surface strike missions and expeditionary warfare.
Survivability - Engineered to function effectively under nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) warfare conditions.

INS Kesari: A Strategic Amphibious Asset
INS Kesari (L15) belongs to the Shardul-class of Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs). Constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, it was commissioned into the Indian Navy on April 5, 2008.
Capabilities and Role:
Transport and Deployment: Designed to carry troops, tanks, armoured vehicles, and essential logistics during amphibious missions.
Amphibious Warfare: Supports beach landings and shore-based operations, essential for island defence and coastal combat.
Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR): Frequently deployed for aid missions, delivering supplies and medical assistance to disaster-affected regions.
