Description

The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Sunayna, currently on an overseas deployment under the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR initiative, recently arrived at Nacala Port in Mozambique. This strategic visit aims to strengthen India’s maritime cooperation with countries in the Southwest Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and reflects India’s growing role in regional maritime security.

About INS Sunayna

INS Sunayna is the second Saryu-class Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) of the Indian Navy, showcasing India's indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. It was designed and built by Goa Shipyard Limited, an important contributor to India’s self-reliance in naval manufacturing. The vessel was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 15th October 2013 at Kochi and currently operates under the Southern Naval Command.

INS Sunayna is equipped for a variety of roles that include:

  • Fleet support operations

  • Coastal and offshore patrolling

  • Ocean surveillance and maritime monitoring

  • Protection of sea lines of communication (SLOCs)

  • Safeguarding offshore resources and installations

  • Escort missions and search-and-rescue operations

With its advanced navigation systems and onboard sensors, the vessel is crucial in extending India’s maritime footprint and operational reach in the Indian Ocean Region.

About IOS SAGAR

IOS SAGAR (Indian Ocean Ship SAGAR) is a key initiative led by the Indian Navy, reflecting India's foreign policy vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR). The initiative is aimed at promoting regional cooperation and capacity-building among IOR nations through direct naval engagement.

This deployment is unique as it serves multiple strategic purposes:

  • Training support: The mission provides onboard training and operational exposure to naval personnel from Friendly Foreign Nations (FFNs).

  • Maritime collaboration: It helps establish a shared platform for maritime agencies across the Southwest IOR to work together on common security challenges.

  • Regional presence: The mission underscores India’s position as a “preferred security partner” and a “first responder” in the region during maritime crises or natural disasters.

  • Diplomatic outreach: Port calls like the one in Mozambique serve as instruments of soft power, reinforcing bilateral ties and people-to-people connections.

The mission’s motto, "One Ocean, One Mission", reflects the shared responsibility of all Indian Ocean nations in maintaining maritime peace, security, and prosperity.

Strategic Importance Of Mozambique

Mozambique, with its long coastline along the Indian Ocean, is a key maritime partner in Southern Africa. India has been engaging with Mozambique through various bilateral initiatives, and naval cooperation plays an essential role in strengthening this relationship. The visit of INS Sunayna to Nacala Port further solidifies this partnership and provides opportunities for joint exercises, humanitarian assistance, and mutual learning.

Conclusion

The deployment of INS Sunayna to Africa under IOS SAGAR is part of India's broader strategy to enhance its maritime engagement and strengthen naval cooperation with like-minded nations in the Indian Ocean. Through such deployments, India not only upholds maritime security but also fosters mutual growth and shared prosperity among Indian Ocean littoral states.
